Anti-evolutionists often seem to ask:
Where are the transitional forms?
To which the usual answer seems to be:
Well, we have this one, this one, and this one… etc.
Which is quite correct obviously. There are a myriad of fossils that show the progression between (for example) land mammals and the modern whale.
However, that answer also seems to miss one of the central points of evolution. Every form we have ever seen is a transitional one. Every form evolved from its ancestors, and will continue to evolve into its descendants. The current state of life on this planet isn’t the ultimate expression of evolution. It’s just one step along the way. There is no goal, no final life form that must arise. There is no point at which evolution would say ‘Right, this creature is perfect, my job is done’.
