Purely in the interests of science, the quietAtheist is going to attempt to eat this for lunch: It appears that some of the religious types are up in arms because the British Humanist Association (which helped organise the recent Atheist Bus campaign) was given money from the government ‘Faith Communities Capacity Building Fund’. French activists have been protesting over the Popes recent ‘Condoms aren’t the answer for AIDS in Africa’ stance. I posted a short message about the UN trying to outlaw blasphemy a little while back. Well, now Pat Condell has covered this subject in a video.
How exactly does that work? Given that most surveys still show that Christians (although there is a suggestion that many are just cultural Christians) are still in the majority in this country, how exactly are they being persecuted? So, the Pope is on a little trip to Africa, and just can’t resist spreading some mis-information. As anyone who lives in the British Isles (of which Ireland is a part, even if they’re not too keen on it), and several other places (most notably New York) will no doubt be aware, today is St Patricks Day. I posted this a while back on another site, I figured I should re-post it here: To all those theists who wonder why us atheists care… We care for many reasons. We care because we don’t like seeing people waste their time praising a God that doesn’t exist and looking forward to an afterlife that they will never find when they would be better off spending their time enjoying the all too short time that we are given on this world. It appears that some evolutionary biologists at the University of Colorado have been receiving death threats from some religious nutter. Apparently, which ever coward is issuing these threats, is so insecure in their own beliefs that they think that someone unrelated to their every day lives working in a field of science is so absolutely evil that they should die! According to some religious doctrines, all this was created just for us. Space, Stars, and Galaxies (dial-up warning, 1.4MB image file) Hardly seems likely now does it? There seem to be many religious nutters who continually spout on about the end of the world, or the second coming, or some other such nonsense. They often seem to think that we are currently living in The End Days. Most recently David Wilkerson has decided that New York is about to burn to the ground or something. Well, lets have some accurate results please! No, this isn’t a competition where you come up with the best name for a Tanzanian witch and win a funky prize. This is a scheme introduced by the Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete to name those responsible for killing albinos for ritual purposes. A 75 year old Saudi woman has been sentenced to 40 lashes and 4 months imprisonment simply because the met with two men who weren’t related to her. The two men also received similar punishments. Imagine sometime in the future someone manages to invent a time-machine, and then uses it to take herself, and a few modern, everyday devices back 2000 years or so. What would be the reaction of the local humans to such things as a gas-lighter, a motorbike, a walkie-talkie, or even a gun? A CAMPAIGN to make September 30, 2009, an international Blasphemy Day has just been launched on the social networking site Facebook. |
