St. Georges Day

As I’m English, I’m well aware that today is St Georges Day – St George being the patron saint of England for my foreign visitors. Seeing as I made mention of St Patrick not so long ago, I felt I could hardly ignore St George.

Not much is known about St George. He was born in Turkey in the 3rd century, and served with honour and bravery in the Roman army. He was a Christian, and despite the Romans best efforts he never renounced his beliefs.

The most famous story about St George is of course where he is said to have slain a dragon. Unfortunately though the first evidence for the story seems to be from around the 12thcentury, so it’s almost certain that the story is apocryphal – that and the fact that there is no such thing as dragons of course! That seems to be a common thread with Christian mythology.

There are many people calling for St Georges day to be declared a public holiday, and more be done to celebrate Englishness. That’s fine with me, anything that gets me an extra day off work is A-OK.

Anyway, to all of my fellow countrymen out there, wear your English rose badge on your three lions t-shirt whilst waving your red and white flags with pride! (Oh, and don’t forget the knotted handkerchief, shorts, milk-bottle white legs, and sandals with socks – all part of the English national dress)

Have a great St Georges Day. :D
